Lightermen and Watermen

Watermen (also known as Wherrymen) transferred passengers by boat from moored ships in the river estuary, whilst Lightermen transferred goods and cargo  by barge from moored ships to land. Watermen and Lightermen have plied their trade from medieval times in various rivers and estuaries notably the River Thames. The Company of Watermen and Lightermen was founded in 1514 and the Act of Parliament regulated Watermen and Lightermen from the time of King Henry VIII.

Water & Lightermen Apprenticeships commenced from the 1555 Act, ‘Thames Watermen,’  the only City Guild to be controlled by an Act of Parliament.
