                                                                                        Early Railway Companies.

Amongst the larger and more well known early Railway Companies that were set up by Acts of Parliament in the 19th Century are listed below. The listing is by no means complete, in 1846 there were some 270 Railway Companies throughout Great Britain.

There was a Grouping of Railway Companies in 1923, Railways Act 1921, known as the Grouping Act, this was an attempt by the

Government to stem losses being made by the Railway Companies. Following the Act the Railway Companies were dubbed the ‘Big Four’.

Way’ Rail Track consists of; Rails, Sleepers, Ballast, Fixtures and Fastenings. The description of ‘Permanent Way’ Rail Track, is just

that, its ‘Permanent’. Some Rail Track was laid as temporary, track  to transport bulk spoil and materials then taken up when the work

        was completed.
