HMS Defence was Flagship of Rear Admiral Sir Robert Arbuthnot, Battle of Jutland. Boy 1st Class, Edward PRING was KIA; 31st May 1916. HMS Defence was sunk by a German Battlecruiser & German Dreadnought Battleships. HMS Defence was seen to be hit by a salvo from the German Ships and her magazines denoted, blowing Defence up. Her entire crew of 779 were killed in the explosions, where she sunk.

The Sinking of HMS Maharatta.
On 25 Feb 1944, HMS Mahratta Pennant No; G 23, Commanded by; Lt. Cdr E.A.F. Drought, DSC, RN., was hit by a Torpedo from U-990 about 280 miles from the North Cape, while escorting Russia Convoy JW-57. HMS Mahratta exploded and sank very quickly. Two Royal Navy Destroyers HMS Impulsive D 11., commanded by Lt. Cdr P. Bekenn, RN and HMS Wanderer D 74., commanded by Lt. Cdr R.F. Whinney, DSC, RN were quickly on the scene to pick up survivors. There were only 16 survivors recovered from the freezing waters. HMS Maharatta’s Captain, 10 Officers, and 209 Ratings lost their lives.
