Cordwainers, Boot Makers, Shoemakers and Cobblers

A Cordwainer is a Shoe maker that makes new shoes from new leather. According to historical accounts in Great Britain.

Cobblers were forbidden by the Mayor of London to being Shoe Repairers and not making Shoes in new leather.

In the Historic Guild System, Cordwainers and Cobblers had separate Guilds.

The Worshipful Company of Cordwainers dates back to 1272 when it received its first Ordinance. The term ‘Cordwainer’ is

derived from the French ‘Cordonnier’ which arrived in Britain after Willian the Conqueror’s invasion of 1066.

In the USA in 1984, a number of Shoemakers founded the ‘Honourable Cordwainers Company’ (HCC) as a present day Guild.,

The HCC obtained official status by being recognised by  ‘The Master of The Worshipful Company of Cordwainers’, London,

   England.

In Canada, a settlement that was being established in 1749 in Nova Scotia, now named Halifax. Amongst the hundreds of

new settlers arriving in Transport Ships were nineteen Cordwainers.
