PRINGs in the Royal Air Force
Updated; October 2024
The Royal Air Force (RAF) was formed 1st April 1918 with the amalgamation of the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) and the
Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS). At the start of World War 1 (WW1) the RFC consisted of; 1 Balloon Squadron and 4
Airplane Squadrons of some 60 aircraft. The RNAS, as the Naval Wing of the RFC, commenced in July 1914 and was
under Admiralty control. THE RNAS at the outset of WW1 had some 90+ Airplanes, 6 Airships, 2 Balloons and some 700
personnel.
The RNAS maintained a number of RNAS Squadrons on the Western Front. Interservice rivalry for Air Resources existed
with the RFC & RNAS competing for various classes of Aircraft. At the time of the merger the RNAS had grown to
nearly 3,000 Aircraft and 56,000 personnel. At the merger, RFC Squadrons retained their Squadron Number, the RNAS
Squadrons had the number 200 inserted onto their Squadron Number, eg. RNAS Squadron 1, became RAF Squadron 201.
At its inception in April 1918 the Royal Air Force became the largest and most powerful Air Force in the world. At the 1918 Armistice personnel in the RAF was more than 300,000 with over 22,000 Aircraft in some 260 Squadrons. After WW1 theRAF was substantially reduced in size, Officer numbers were cut to 1,500 and Other Ranks were reduced to 34,000. During the inter war years the RAF, had to fight for survival, with Governments questioning the need for a separate Air Force.
In 1936 the RAF re-organised into 3 Commands; 1. Fighter Command, 2. Bomber Command and 3. Coastal Command.
It was with this structure and a very decimated RAF entered World War 2.
This is a listing of PRINGs who joined the; Royal Flying Corps, Royal Naval Air Service & Royal Air force.
