PRING;     Police - Bow Street Runners - Constables - Watchment

The Met’.

The earliest modern Police Force in England was the Metropolitan Police of London, established in 1829 by Sir Robert Peel. ‘The Met’ as it became known, was established in the Metropolitan Police Act of 1829. ‘The Met’ is also known as 'Scotland Yard'(self titled ). The first Officers were known as ‘bobbies’ or ‘peelers, terms that have carried on to this day.

‘Watchmen & Constables’.

Prior to establishing a statutory police force policing as such, was commenced by local Watchmen, guarding City areas at night. Constables of the local Parish Authorities, providing Law Enforcement and arresting individuals suspected of wrong doing. At the end of the 19th Century these local initiatives, of what were poorly paid Watchmen and Constables, were inadequate as sprawling Industrial areas in cities and towns developed.

Amongst the earliest of Britain’s Police Force were High Constables in the City of Edinburgh in 1611 and the Glasgow City Police Force which was established by an Act of Parliament in the year 1800.

‘Bow Street Runners’.

Another early example of Policing was in London with a group of law enforcement Officers, known as the Bow Street Runners. They were established by Magistrate Henry Fielding in 1749, and were effective in investigating Crime and arresting suspects. There were initially 6 Bow Street Ruinners, the force was extended and by 1800 there were 68. The Bow Street Runners were provided with Handcuffs, a Stick and a Pistol.

‘ Bow Street Mounted Horse’.

The Bow Street Mounted Horse Patrol were established in 1758 by John Fielding, Henry Fielding’s half brother. They were able in patrolling country roads around London interdicting with Highwaymen. The Horse Patrol Officers became nicknamed ‘Robin Redbreasts’ as they wore Scarlet Waistcoats under their Greatcoats.
