PRINGs  in  the  Royal  Australian  Navy  (RAN)

The Commonwealth Naval Force  was formed 1st March 1901 through the amalgamation of vessels from five of the six Colonial Navies, New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia and Tasmania, Western Australia did not have a Naval Force.

On the 10th July 1911 the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) was established.

The first Royal Australian Navy ship was HMAS Parramatta, a destroyer, she was launched at Govan, Scotland on 9th February 1910. Her sister ship HMAS Yarra was launched at Dunbarton, Scotland 9th Apr 1910. A third destroyer HMAS Warrego was commissioned in 1912 at Sydney.

HMAS Australia  - Battle Cruiser

In 1913 HMAS Australia, Indefatigable-class Battle Cruiser, 18,500 tons, 4 x twin 12inch Guns and 16  x 4inch Guns joined the Fleet as Flagship of the RAN. This was followed by HMAS Melbourne and HMAS Sydney, Town Class Light Cruisers, 5,400 tons, 8 x 6inch Guns

At the outbreak of WW1, the Royal Australian Fleet comprised, the Battle Cruiser HMAS Australia, with 6 x Light Cruisers, 6 x Destroyers and 2 x Submarines (HMAS AE1 & HMAS AE2), with a host of ancillary craft. HMAS AE2 was the first Allied warship to penetrate the Dardanelles in support of the Gallipoli Campaign. HMAS AE2 was latter scuttled by her crew after being badly damaged by Turkish Gun Fire.

During WW1 the RAN was commanded by the British Admiralty, By August 1914 the RAN had 3,800 Officers and Ratings of which some 820 persons came from the Royal Navy.
